She admitted that the actions and comments reported were “certainly to be condemned”, but falsely claimed the people who made them were “neither GI activists nor GI members”.Īl Jazeera’s investigation focused on key members of the group’s Lille branch, one of the most active GI chapters in France, and implicated its powerful leader Aurélien Verhassel. In a video response to the letter, GI spokesperson Thaïs d’Escufon said she was “very at ease” with Al Jazeera’s investigation. In 2017, GI was behind the “Defend Europe” stunt that saw far-right activists set sail on the Mediterranean Sea in an attempt to block refugee rescue operations. The far-right group had 10 days from receiving the letter to respond to the accusations before the ministry formally begins closing the group. The letter accuses GI of “openly hateful rhetoric” which “contributes to heightening tensions within the national community” and “provokes violent attacks”. The letter cites a number of cases that highlight the group’s racism, violence, and the basis on which it is considered a “private militia” and goes on to say that “the comments made and the Nazi-inspired gestures … as well as the threats of further attacks, demonstrate the true face of this organisation and its activists”. On Saturday, dozens in Paris rallied against the move – scheduled to begin Monday – some of whom wore blue vests emblazoned with the words “Génération Identitaire”, the French name of the group which advocates for “defending the identity and culture of white Europeans” and decries what it calls the “great replacement” by immigration and “Islamisation”.Īccording to a letter dated February 11 from the French Ministry of Interior to GI’s president, the Al Jazeera investigation Generation Hate “revealed the reality of this organisation” where members “rejoiced at the assault of a woman of North African origin”. So, there’s a few facts to think about the next time you say or shout “Shut that door”.France is beginning the process of shutting down the far-right Generation Identity (GI) group, a move that comes after Al Jazeera’s undercover investigation exposed the group’s racism, violence, and connections with Marine Le Pen’s National Rally party. During the filming of the semi-final, our witty presenter Terry Wogan made the controversial comment that it sounded like Ryan was singing ‘shut that door’.ĭoorsan Ltd have a French’ inspired’ door designs such as the Richelieu Clear Glazed door. Unfortunately the song did not make it to the final as it reached twelfth out of twenty three acts. Featuring mainly English lyrics, other than the title, Je t’adore was sung by Kate Ryan representing Belgium. Interestingly a song called ‘Je t’adore’ was released and sung at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest during the semi-finals. Shut De Do is often thought to be a Caribbean calypso or a spiritual religious song, however Stonehill was a white man from California and the song has since been adopted by many schools and spiritual choirs due to the easy tune and lyrics. The next line is ‘Keep out de debil’ or ‘Keep out the devil”. Also there is a song called ‘Shut De Do’ meaning shut the door by Randy Stonehill and covered by various other artists. There appears to be a number of songs with this title or something similar, including “Shut the Door” by American band Fugazi. Of course, the reason for writing about this phrase on the Doorsan blog is the close connection to the phrase ‘Shut the door’. The literal translation is ‘I adore you’, which does sound pretty strong to me, however it is used in a situation where you are saying ‘I like you a lot’ perhaps to a friend or relative or a partner before you are fully committed. While many people think that it means ‘I love you’, it is not really quite as strong as this. This is a common French phrase which is often misinterpreted.
